The War Cemetery at Storfosna - Also known as the Russian Cemetery

On the quiet island of Storfosna, you will find a lesser-known yet significant historical site – a war cemetery that bears witness to the tragic events of World War II. This cemetery is difficult to find, and the graves have long been neglected. Nevertheless, it stands as a symbol of the human suffering that took place here during the occupation. The war cemetery is linked to a prisoner camp established on the island for Soviet and Polish prisoners of war. The prisoners were forced to carry out labor tasks for the German coastal artillery battery HKB 19/975, which was established on Storfosna in the summer of 1942. According to historical sources, including Koch (1988), around 600 prisoners of war worked on the island from January 1943 to May 1945. They were compelled to perform grueling tasks such as building bunkers and tunnels for the artillery. While the Germans on Storfosna were relatively humane compared to other camps, there was a Norwegian Nazi who made life particularly difficult for the prisoners. According to historical sources, the Germans themselves were warned about this man, who was reportedly known for subjecting the prisoners to unnecessary suffering and atrocities. This figure, in contrast to the more regulated approach of the German soldiers, created an additional shadow over the already tragic situation. The gravestones in the cemetery especially mark the nine Soviet prisoners of war who perished on Storfosna. According to prisoner records, they were transferred to the island on October 22, 1942, and they suffered from the brutal conditions in the camp. In 1943, Polish prisoners of war were also sent to Storfosna, and they were later transferred to other work sites, such as on Tarva, in 1944. After the war, the graves of the nine Soviet prisoners of war were first relocated to Ørland Cemetery in 1947, and then to Vinjeøra War Cemetery in 1953, where they now rest. The war cemetery on Storfosna, also referred to locally as the Russian Cemetery, is a quiet testament to the dark times during the occupation. It stands as a monument to those who suffered and died while being forced to work for the enemy's war machine.

The farm Nordheim under the cadastral farm Storfosna.

The farm Nordheim, located under the matrikkel farm Storfosna, has a rich history connected to the croft Mønsterplassen. According to tradition, Mønsterplassen was a place where marines were to muster, and it has been heard that these soldiers may have been associated with Fru Inger til Austrått, a prominent woman in Norwegian medieval history. In 1854, Ole Olsen Grostad (1807-1889) moved from Lensvika here, along with his wife Ane Dorotea Iversdatter (1816-1894). They had six children. Johan Olsen Grostad, their son, became a crofter after Ole, and it is documented that several people lived in his household. The farm was later purchased in 1923 by Arnt Moen, who was married to Maren Kristoffersdatter. After Arnt Moen, his sons, Ludvik and Ole Moen, took over the operation. In 1976, the farm was taken over by Helge Moen, and later, in 1995, it was transferred to Agnes Elise Moen.
